Following Thanksgiving, there’s a flurry of days that might become a blur.  Black Friday.  Small Business Saturday. Cyber Monday.  And now Giving Tuesday.

In it’s second year, Giving Tuesday (like the rest of the days following Thanksgiving) is a response to Black Friday by highlighting various charities and encouraging giving to worthy causes.  In it’s inaugural year, over 53% of donations spiked year over year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving.  This has increase has spurred nonprofits to jump in on the fun.  Last year saw roughly 2,500 nonprofits join – this year: over 7,500.

The site, GivingTuesday.org aims to connect donors and major charities together.  Giving Tuesday’s movement has not been shy about utilizing social media. From #GivingTuesday hastags to #UNselfie instagram photos to “Hangout-a-thons” similar to a telethon, it’s working hard to get it’s word out.

So celebrate!  The ideas that Giving Tuesday brings, doesn’t mean that you have to celebrate just on December 3rd this year.  Use it as a resource to get ideas on nonprofits that need your help, then give throughout the year.  They could certainly use one more advocate on their side!
