Amestoy Estates is one of the most prestigious communities in Encino. In a town where “South of the Boulevard” is the place to be, Amestoy Estates surprisingly sits just north. The draw? Sprawling ranch homes can have large flat lots along the peaceful streets.
Originally named after Domingo Amestoy, one of the largest wool producers in Southern California during the mid 1800’s, Amestoy died just days after purchasing the 4,460 acre Rancho Los Encinos. His sons assumed operations of the ranch, renaming it Amestoy Ranch in 1891. By 1915, the Amestoy descendants began selling off the land until the last of it was sold in 1944.
Major boundaries for Amestoy Estates span from White Oak Avenue on the west to Balboa at the east. The northern border is considered to be Killion Street with Ventura Blvd on the south, the roughly 575 properties span from half acre lots to 4 acre estates. Having Ventura Blvd as a border makes it easy to access the plethora of local haunts (like famous BBQ joint Quincy’s) to the Monday morning savior spot Starbucks.
The neighborhood strives for anonymity at every turn. Most streets end in cul-de-sacs. A few streets are completely gated. There are no sidewalks. Compounded with the large lots and the mature trees, the aura exudes comfortable tranquility. Yet some of the most recognizable faces of entertainment can be seen poking out of these houses. Celebrities like Ray Romano, Marc Anthony, Edward James Olmos and David Hasselhoff have lived in these homes. Houses themselves has gained notoriety as well: Vinny Chase’s swanky spread in the TV Show Entourage was really in Amestoy Estates.
