Friday 05/16/14

DTLAFusicology Friday Featuring Jeremy Sole brings music and happy hour to Downtown LA.  Event is free and for all ages.
Hollywood– Did you attend Hollywood High at one point?  For you local Hollywooders, head to HHS Alumni Day at Hollywood High School.  There will be a once in a lifetime bronze plaque unveiling at the HHS library.  This will be complete K-earth 101 broadcasting from the school as well as Tommy’s Shack on Wheels providing food.
Pasadena-Bike-in movie night.  It’s bike week in Pasadena and what better way to watch a movie for bike lovers than on a bike during Bike-In Movie Night? David, I’m looking at you here, my friend.
Pasadena– There is nothing like dinner, drinks and a good DJ on a Friday night.  Come out to the USC Pacific Asia Museum for a special summer series, Fusion Fridays.  There will be food trucks for your eating pleasure.  The museum is honoring an exhibition called The Other Side: Chinese and Mexican Immigration to America.
Studio City-A great life skill for kids to learn are the  cooking basics for an after school plan.  Giving your kids the tools and confidence to make their own healthy meals is priceless.  This free class offered at COOK LA.
West Hollywood- Some nights you need to feel posh, and for that, there is nothing like a Gallery grand opening.  De Re Gallery is ready for you.  New vibrant pieces and some classics.  Take a stroll through and maybe take one home to sophisticate your home.

Burbank– There are few things in life better than pancakes.  Much less pancakes for a good cause.   The YMCA is holding their 50th Annual Pancake Breakfast. $5 for pancakes, sausage, fruit juice and coffee.
Hollywood-Learn how to help the earth and help yourself.  If you have a green thumb, then heading to the Compost Tea for a Garden Workshop is right up your alley.  Cost is free but the knowledge is very valuable.
North Hollywood– North Hollywood Regional Library is hosting a Used Book Sale.  From 10am-2pm.  Pick up some new favorite books, DVD’s or CD’s.  All proceeds go back to the library.
Oxnard– I don’t get to head up there that often–but this is the one time of year I make sure take the trip up the coast and vist Oxnard’s most wonderful time of the year. The 31st annual Strawberry Festival comes to town and runs through the 18th.
Pacoima-Learn about history told through the eyes of artists.  A Mural Walking Tour will be given by artists and curators of the Museum of San Fernando Valley.
Pasadena– Here’s one more family event is to help everyone get out and celebrate Bike Week in Pasadena:  Kaiser Permanente’s Ride, Roll and Stroll.  Bike with the Mayor.  Meet at Pasadena City Hall to start the fun.
Santa Monica– Dubbed the “Rolls Royce of Garage Sales”, Santa Monica will have some serious swag to pick up.  Lots of celebs and brand names.  The event is hosted by Molly Sims and Rachel Zoe.
Santa Monica- Santa Monica Alternative School House presents SuperSMASH, a carnival for the whole family. Tons of fun, music and water games to play.  Admission is free
Tarzana– Hear your inner Katniss calling?  Staving off the call to start a revolution?  Come on down to the Woodley Park Archery Range. You can shoot and have some BBQ.  Admission is free is you are a WPA member or $5 for non-members.

Century CityCelebrate Israel Walk takes place on May 18th.  Come on down for a walk, balloons and good times.
Malibu– I decided to keep this one on here despite the distance because of Hubsters fondness for saving the bees lately – maybe you’ve been hearing the buzz about the bee plight as well.  Buzz! Ha! Get it?  Join the Honeylove.org Yellow Tie event.  Learn how to protect bees and even learn how to become a beekeeper.
Sherman OaksThe Help Group presents a free concert for individuals with Autism and their families.  It is being held at the Help Group Autism Center. This concert will be interactive with different stations.
South Pasadena-The small community of South Pasadena is hosting a Hollywood veteran, Tony Piazza at the Public Library.  Tony’s goes over his acting day and how he became a writer and is sharing his life experiences with all those interested in hearing his interesting stories.
Thousand Oaks– Jazz.  Wine.  3rd annual California Jazz and Wine Festival.  Need I say more?  Event is at the Conejo Creek Park.  There is no better way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon.
Lake BalboaWorldfest LA is coming to town! It is the largest Vegan food and music festival.  Find your inner hippie and learn about the vegan lifestyle and some other healthy ways of living.  Not that all vegans are hippies, of course!
Westwood– Clearly I need more piano in my life.  Head  to UCLA’s Royce Hall to hear Piano Fest.  The classics will be on tap that night.

Friday 05/23/14

Beverly Hills– Franklin Canyon Park is doing a Native Ways hike.  Explore how natives used tools, instruments and wove baskets.  This is considered an easy hike.
 DTLA-Put on your dancing shoes and find some latin soul: LA Salsa Fest hits downtown LA.  No, we’re not talking about the food here… dance the nights—or week away from the 21st to the 25th.
Echo Park– Edendale Branch Library is holding a screening of the film Freedom Riders on May 24th at 2pm.  There will also be an open forum to discuss the issue of racism and what can be done.
Santa Clarita-Spring is in the air, literally.  Come one view all the birds who visit Towsley Canyon.  Birders of all levels welcome.
Santa Monica– It’s that time of the year, time for outdoor movies.  Night Sesh, a monthly outdoor movie event at the California Heritage Museum Lawn will be showing  Zero to 100 will be shown to inspire all those young surfers.  Proceeds support Boarding for Breast Cancer.
Studio City-Famous percussionist Poncho Sanchez gives all he’s got in one of two shows at the infamous Vitellos restaurant.

Saturday 05/24/14

Pasadena–  Come and visit the heritage that is in Pasadena by exploring this beautiful historic neighborhood and joining the Ninita Parkway-Rose Villa Walking Tour.  Tour are on the ½ hour from 9am-12:30.
Silver Lake– Wine a little, you’ll feel better.  The 4th annual Wildwood Wine Tasting is happening at Silver Lake Wine. Proceeds from the evening will support Wildwoods’ innovative programs with Los Angeles schools: Full Circle, Oakgrove, A Drop in the Bucket and more.
Topanga– The 41st annual Topanga Days is happening at the Topanga Community House fair grounds.  The festival is the longest running Bohemian/country in LA.  Fun for everyone!
West Hills– Getting the kids involved in the meaning of a holiday is important.  The Canoga Park/West Hills Chamber of Commerce will kick off Memorial Day weekend with a 5k-10 run and the kids only 1k run.

Sunday 05/25/14

Century City– The valley has a huge feral cat population!  If you’re looking for a way to take better care of these balls of fur, the Feral Cat Community is offering a one day work shop to help the community understand the feral cat.
Hollywood– Get a good base because it’s pub crawl time.  The world famous Memorial Day PubCrawl is happening.  It’s the best night you won’t remember.
Griffith Park– The Autry in Griffith Park would like to invite you to Pan for Gold.  This fun family event lets you experience the way the 49ers extracted gold from the river.
PasadenaSunday Funday has an art and design open market featuring student artists and alums from Art Center College and Design as well as Pasadena City College.  The best part is that all proceeds go directly to the artists.
Santa Monica-What do you do when you have a 3 day weekend? Get your party on.  Main St. Memorial Day Weekend Block Party will help you do that. It goes from 2pm-2am.

Monday 05/26/14

DTLA–  If you didn’t get your fill of salsa dancing on Friday then the Salsa Session in Grand Park is where you need to be.  Lots of bands and lots of fun for the low, low cost of free.
Marina del Rey– Get your party on.  Marina del Rey Yacht Party time.  Pier Pressure presents a summer kickoff party from 3-7:30pm.  21+
Moorpark-Not into BBq-ing?  Try a Martial Arts Memorial Day camp.  Tang Soo Do University is holding a camp from 8am-noon.
North Hollywood- Throw a stick in this town and meet an actor/singer/dancer who’ll appreciate an open mic night.  Enjoy some laughs and watch someone get their big break during The Good Mic at the Good Nite.
Santa Monica– Come and learn about history from those who lived it during the Living History Tour free event.
Sherman Oaks- The 25th annual Memorial Day Parade kicks off at 10am.  Come out to honor and celebrate this day.
Sylmar-Looking to pay your respects on Memorial Day? The Pioneer Cemetery is offering an observance.  Services start 11am.
