Here’s your guide to what’s happening in the San Fernando Valley during the next two weekends, May 3, 4, 5 and 10, 11, 12.

Fri May 3rd

LOS ANGELES: Los Angeles Pancakes & Booze Art Show – Lot 613 – From Friday 8 pm to Sunday 2 am. If you like art, booze, and pancakes, this Underground Pop-Up Art Show is a can’t-miss event for you! This weekend marks the 10th Anniversary Show of the “largest pop-up art movements to hit North America over the past decade.” Features: 150+ local artists exhibiting 700+ pieces of artwork, FREE All-U-Can-Eat Pancakes, live audio performances by local DJs and music producers, body painting and art. For ages 21+. $10 at the door, cash only.

LOS ANGELES: Photoville LA – Outside the Annenberg Space for Photography – See website for days and hours. Friday and Saturday. Annenberg Space for Photography Presents Photoville LA — the largest photographic event in NYC is in Los Angeles for the first time in its seven-year history, created and produced by UNITED PHOTO INDUSTRIES. Through May 5. FREE.

SOUTH EL MONTE: Cinco de Mayo Celebration – South El Monte Community Center – This annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration is from 5 to 9 pm. Festivities will include live performances, Mariachi, and Boxing Show (at 7 pm).

VENICE: Abbot Kinney First Fridays – Abbot Kinney Blvd. – Food trucks line Abbot Kinney, and the shops stay open late with special sales and events on the first Friday of every month. FREE.

LOS ANGELES: Free Comic Book Day – Golden Apple – Just one of the many celebrations of FCBD throughout LA and the SFV (and country!). FREE comic books, refreshments, and discounts. CULVER CITY: Taste of the Nation – For No Kid Hungry – From 1 pm to 4 pm. Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Los Angeles’ Taste of the Nation and enjoy an abundance of delicious food and drink. GARDENA: Cinco de Mayo Parade & Celebration – Parade begins at Gardena Blvd. and New Hampshire Ave. It ends at Mas Fuki Park, where more festivities will be held, including Mariachis, food, folklorico dancing, classic cars, the 2019 Cinco de Mayo Royal Court, vendors, and more.

LOS ANGELES: 2019 VegFest Los Angeles – Woodley Park – From 10:30 am to 6:30 pm. L.A.’s largest FREE vegan lifestyle festival! The combination of a delicious vegan international food court, great live music, empowering speakers on health, environmental, humanitarian and animal topics, kids’ activities, yoga, animal adoptions, an eco-marketplace with over 150 vendors, and more, make for an an unforgettable earth-friendly experience that is sure to be enjoyable for all!

LOS ANGELES: Cinco de Mayo at the Coliseum – Celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Olympic Plaza with live music, family activities, dancing, games, prizes, celebrity MCs, Kid’s Playland, cocktails in the beer garden.

PASADENA: SoCal Moms Community Play Day – Southern California Children’s Museum – From 10 am to noon. Enjoy a special morning at the museum, music with Lovebug & Me, arts & crafts, snacks and more. This event is free to attend, but spots are limited. Please make sure to pre-register for each individual attending and to cancel your reservation if you are no longer attending so someone else can join.

NOTE: Griffith Observatory is closed through May 6. Griffith Observatory and the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks are undertaking four major projects in and around the Observatory to make it easier, safer, and more satisfying to visit. These projects involve construction at the building and on the roads.

Fri May 10th

REDONDO: Free Family Movie Nights 2019 – Redondo Pier – The Redondo Beach Pier screens free movies on the Boardwalk every Friday night in May. Movies begin at dusk. This week’s show is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. FREE.

THOUSAND OAKS: Conejo Valley Days – Through Sunday, May 12 – The 62nd annual Conejo Valley Days in Thousand Oaks celebrates the area’s rich heritage and volunteer spirit. The multi-day event features entertainment for kids, teens, and the whole family including carnival rides, games, live entertainment, a western saloon, outhouse races and a food court. Live entertainment and hands-on exhibits are included with general admission. Kids in grades K – 8 can earn free ride tickets through the Read & Ride Program. Adults $10, children (6-12) $5, ages 5 and under are FREE.

LOS ANGELES: Saturday Mornings at the Opera – Dorothy Chandler Pavilion – Introduce your family to the magic of opera. From a bed of pillows, children enjoy an interactive, family-friendly opera under the glittering chandeliers of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. At only $18 a ticket, the whole family will make lasting memories and have an unforgettable experience. Before the show, little ones get their wiggles out with a full hour of music, dance and art workshops. They will create special souvenirs to remember their first (or second, or third) time at the opera.

PASADENA: Final Fridays Food Truck Festival – Rose Bowl Stadium – Check out all your favorite food trucks as you enjoy outdoor games, moon bounces, photo opps, foot golf, and tours of the Rose Bowl Stadium all from The Greens around the stadium.

LAWNDALE: Alondra Park Fishing Derby – Alondra Community Regional Park – Grab a pole and head over to the lake at Alondra Park. Don’t have a pole? Rent one for free! There will be plenty of food, fish & fun times for all! Learn some interesting facts, play some fishing games and enter the raffles! Kids 15 and under don’t need a license. Everyone else will need a valid fishing license to participate.

HUNTINGTON BEACH: Discovery Cube’s Annual Rocket Launch – The Boeing Company – Design, build and launch your own water bottle rocket and participate in their longest “hang time” competition and become the 2019 Grand Rocketeer! Bring an empty 2-liter bottle, your problem solving skills, imagination and transform that bottle into a rocket. Engineers from The Boeing Company will be on campus offering design and engineering tips to all participants. FREE but registration is required.

LONG BEACH: The Queen Mary’s Waterfront Cook-Off – Queen Mary Events Park – Calling all BBQ and chili lovers! The Queen Mary’s Waterfront Cook-Off will be bringing an afternoon of delicious food, competition, brews, and family fun to SoCal today. The event will be the California State Championship competition for BBQ, sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, and California State Championship for Chili, sanctioned by ICS. For $35, get five tasting tickets to enjoy a plethora of food options, enjoy DJs spinning, food, family-friendly games, food, an eating contest and more in our outdoor events park. Ages 4 and under are FREE.

PASADENA: Celebrate Mothers! Free Day at USC Pacific Asia Museum – Explore the Japanese art of flower arranging known as Ikebana – Every second Sunday of the month USC PAM offers a different activity around art at our museum! Enjoy free admission all day, an art activity, story time and go on a docent-led tour of the galleries and garden!
